Xi WangMu (Controlling Immortality) – 36×48 Oils on Canvas

Xi WangMu is a Chinese goddess and guardian of the Peaches of Immortality. As one of China’s oldest goddesses Xi WangMu has changed greatly over the years, from earlier more zoomorphic forms in early Chinese Shamanism to a formalized humanoid figure in more modern times. she is often shown as either very elderly or  young and beautiful, with a tail, wings or in a more traditional Immortal style. I chose to depict her with wings similar to those shown in pieces from the second Han Dynasty and described in Tang poetry.
