A third gender is frequently recognized within indigenous groups worldwide. The Chukchi of Siberia embrace trans identities as shamans, transwomen are referred to as ne’uchica and transmen are referred to as qa’cikcheca. Women in Chukchi tribes are tattooed on their faces in lines, the veil in this render references the tattooing that women undergo when they come of age.
